Dumpster Size Guide for Contractors

Picking the right size up front saves you from paying for a swap you didn’t need — or an overage fee because you undersized the job. Here’s how our four sizes break down.

Size Included Tonnage Price Best For
10 Yard 2 tons $395 1-2 room construction projects, small garage/house cleanouts, up to 30 squares of single-layer shingles
20 Yard 3 tons $495 2-3 room construction, roofing jobs up to ~2,200 sqft, multi-room cleanouts, land clearing
30 Yard 4 tons $595 Commercial/multi-family construction or demolition, large residential builds, big warehouse cleanouts
40 Yard 5 tons $695 Large commercial construction/demolition, whole-home cleanouts, major renovations, highest-volume jobs

All sizes include a 14-day rental (extensions are $5/day). Extra weight beyond the included tonnage is billed at $75/ton. Not sure which size fits? Call (512) 962-2586 and tell us the project — we’ll recommend the right one.

Checklist

Job Site Waste Management Checklist

What to confirm before your dumpster or portable toilet shows up, so delivery day goes smoothly.

  • Confirm placement location. Private property (driveway, jobsite) usually needs no permit. Placing on a street or public right-of-way may require one — tell us where you want it and we’ll flag it.
  • Check the surface. We can set up on grass, dirt, asphalt, or concrete. We use plywood under the wheels on driveways to prevent scratching. We can’t set up on loose gravel or rock.
  • Size the dumpster to the job, not just the volume. Heavy debris like concrete, dirt, or shingles can hit the weight limit long before the dumpster looks full.
  • Know your restricted items. Hazardous waste, batteries, tires, appliances with refrigerant, propane tanks, and certain electronics can’t go in a standard roll-off.
  • Schedule swaps ahead of time. Don’t wait until the dumpster is full — plan swaps 1-2 days out to avoid a crew standing around waiting.
  • Confirm your rental window. Standard rentals run 14 days. If your job might run long, ask about the extension rate up front.
  • Keep your contract and safety rules handy. A link is included in your receipt after booking, or call our office anytime.
  • Save our number for same-day needs. (512) 962-2586 — we can usually fit an urgent swap in within 48 hours.

Avoiding Hidden Dumpster Rental Fees

Five questions to ask any dumpster company before you book, so the price you’re quoted is the price you actually pay.

  1. Does the price include delivery AND pickup? Some companies quote delivery only and add pickup later. Ours always includes both.
  2. How much tonnage is included, and what’s the overage rate? Know the included weight for your size before you load it. Overage beyond that is $75/ton.
  3. Is there a fee if I need to cancel same-day? If a driver is already dispatched and the job cancels last-minute, a $125 dry-run/same-day cancellation fee applies — ask any company about theirs before booking.
  4. What’s the standard rental period, and what happens if I go over? Ours is 14 days, then $5/day. Confirm this up front if your timeline is uncertain.
  5. Is a deposit required, and is it refundable? We require a $50 deposit, fully refunded if you cancel 8+ days ahead, or a rain check (good for a year) if you cancel 2-7 days out.

One more thing to watch for: some haulers tack on credit card processing fees or vague “environmental fees.” We don’t charge either.

Common Contractor Headaches We Solve

After years of working with GCs, developers, and job site supers, we’ve heard the same frustrations over and over. Here’s what actually causes them — and how we handle it differently.

“I can never get anyone on the phone.”

A lot of dumpster companies route you to a call center that can’t actually see your job or schedule a swap. We staff real dispatch — the person who answers can see your account, your delivery, and your schedule, and can act on it right then. That’s why we can usually turn around a same-day or 48-hour swap request instead of “someone will call you back.”

“I got hit with a tonnage overage I didn’t see coming.”

This is almost always a mixed-load problem, not a “too much stuff” problem. Concrete, dirt, and shingles are dense — a dumpster can look half-empty and still be at its weight limit. The fix: keep heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick) in its own dumpster, separate from general C&D and scrap metal. Mixing them means the heavy material drags the whole load’s weight up, and you pay overage on debris that would’ve been fine in its own container. Tell us what your job is generating and we’ll recommend how many dumpsters and what sizes actually make sense — before you’re loading, not after the overage bill.

“My project needs LEED documentation and my hauler can’t provide it.”

We haul C&D waste to TCEQ-authorized recycling facilities and provide diversion documentation to support your LEED submission or City of Austin Green Building Program requirements. Let us know up front that you need LEED tracking so it’s noted on the account from day one, not requested after the fact. See our LEED construction waste recycling page for accepted materials.

“My rental ran long and I got an extension bill I wasn’t expecting.”

Standard rentals run 14 days, then $5/day after that — not hidden, just easy to lose track of on a busy site. If you know a job is going to run past two weeks, tell us at booking and we’ll plan the rental period around your actual timeline instead of you finding out on day 15. If the timeline is uncertain, a quick call a few days before day 14 avoids any surprise.

“I need a dumpster fast and everyone else quotes a week out.”

We’ve built our fleet around a strong truck-to-dumpster ratio specifically so we can offer 24-hour delivery in most cases, even on short notice. If you’re managing multiple active sites, we can also set up scheduled deliveries and swaps so you’re not calling in every single request.

“I can’t tell if this quote is the real price or if fees are coming later.”

One flat price includes delivery and pickup. The only things that can add to it are clearly explained up front: tonnage over your size’s included weight, a dry-run fee if a driver is dispatched and the job cancels same-day, and a daily rate if you keep the dumpster past 14 days. No credit card fees, no vague “environmental fee.” See the full breakdown in our hidden fees guide above.

Real Stories

What Switching Actually Looks Like

These are real contractors who switched to us after dealing with the slow, unresponsive service that’s common with the big national haulers.

Brandon Belk of Brandon Custom Homes was on hold with one of the big national waste companies for 45 minutes — just to schedule a swap that ended up being 7 days out. He switched to us and now reaches us however’s easiest: text, call, email, even Instagram DM. His swaps get scheduled immediately.

— Brandon Belk, Brandon Custom Homes

Kenny Reed of Ten Point Services reached out to a national waste company for a dumpster and waited 4 days just for a quote that never came. He had to follow up himself, and was then told it’d be another 2 weeks out. He called us instead — his dumpster was ordered, delivered, and filled before he ever heard back from the other company.

— Kenny Reed, Ten Point Services

We keep extra trucks and inventory on hand specifically so we can deliver same-day or next-day, worst case — there’s never a real lead time. It costs us more to run it that way, but it’s how we take care of the customer.
